Obituary for Mary Shower McAlister

Mary Shower McAlister passed away Tuesday, April 17, 2018, peacefully at her home near Georgetown, SC in the accompaniment of her immediate family.
Mary was born in Freeport, New York on July 17, 1936, the daughter of Edmund Geiger Shower and Mary Prevost Shower. The family moved to a farm in Quakertown, PA, where Mary and her older brother, Ned, were raised. Mary graduated from Quakertown High School and went on to attend Penn State University, Arizona State University, and the University of Arizona where she graduated in 1958 with a degree in Fine Arts. She took jobs in New York City as an artist and copy editor and embraced the culture of the City, especially the music and stagecraft of Broadway.
On a family vacation to Pawley's Island, SC, in 1960, she met and fell in love with her husband, Robert “Mac” McAlister, and they married that same year. Their three sons, Robert, Jamie, and Charlie, were born between 1964 and 1969, as the family moved between Boston, MA and Columbia, SC. Mary taught Art and English in the schools that her children attended. She also taught her boys to sail and to love the sea, which inspired her and Mac to move her family aboard a wooden sailboat to live simply, studying and exploring the Bahamas. Mary introduced sailing and traveling aboard boats to many of her friends, and helped found the Crab Bank Lady's Sailing Society in Mt Pleasant, and The Harbor Historical Association of Georgetown's South Carolina Maritime Museum Youth Sailing Program in Georgetown.
Alongside Mac, Mary was fearless and pragmatic on the sea, weathering storms and taking her watches with a steady hand and a keen sense for the weather. She came to love the exhilaration of completing long open ocean passages, entering new harbors and making long lasting friendships along the way - from Venezuela, throughout the Caribbean, the US East Coast, two trans-Atlantic crossings, England, Ireland, Spain, and the Mediterranean. A lifelong Francophile, Mary particularly enjoyed traveling the coasts and canals of France, spending a memorable winter aboard ROCINANTE in the center of Paris, among many other ventures. Mary documented every trip with her sharp photographic eye and sketchbook, works which serve as a legacy to a full life. She will be remembered as a seasoned world traveller, a talented photographer, an inspiring teacher, and a loving soul who relished life's simple pleasures with her dear friends, shipmates, and family.
She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Robert “Mac” Monroe McAlister of Georgetown, SC; two sons, Robert Edmund McAlister of Georgetown, SC, and James Andrew McAlister (Leigh) of Mt. Pleasant, SC; one granddaughter, five grandsons, and two nieces. She is preceded in death by her youngest son, Charles Monroe McAlister.
