Obituary for James Michael Ryan

Dr. James Michael Ryan, (LTC, US Army, Ret.) 71, died May 16, 2018, at MUSC after a brief illness. His wife, Susan and daughter, Daphne were with him.
Jim was born on June 9, 1946, in Philadelphia to the late John Edward Ryan and Mary Wiegner Ryan. Dr. Ryan attended LaSalle College and Jefferson Medical School on a full scholarship. He then had an internship in Des Moines, IA, followed by a general surgery residence at Ft. Lenard Wood and a thoracic surgery residency at Bethesda Naval Hospital. While serving on active duty in the US Army, he was stationed in Korea and at 2nd General Hospital in Landstuhl, Germany, where he met and married Susan in 1985. He performed life savings surgeries on numerous active duty military while serving in Europe and abroad, including Marines from the Beirut Bombing in 1983. He took great pride in being a doctor. Jim wanted to give life, not take it. He left active duty and served in the Army Reserves in Albany, NY, where he was employed as a thoracic surgeon at the Albany VA Medical Center. In 1991, Jim was called up for Operation Desert Storm and served as “Desert Doc” in Oman for three months.
Jim and Susan retired to Georgetown, in 2004 where they were members of Georgetown Presbyterian Church. Jim served as clerk of the Session for two terms. In recent years he was a rotating teacher of the Adult Fellowship Class. Over the years he went with his family on a mission trip to Zambia in support of orphans of the Aids epidemic and on a trip to Peacehaven Farm in NC to assist with construction of a residence for disabled adults. He has participated faithfully in the Men’s Breakfast group. He has enjoyed family trips to Hawaii, Australia, the Caribbean, and across the continental US. Many in the family remember Jim as a “punster” who would punish anyone who would listen. He loved his family and friends deeply and enjoyed a good belly laugh.
In addition to his parents, Jim was predeceased by: a brother, Timothy Patrick Ryan who died in 1988
Surviving are: his wife, Susan Hay Ryan of Georgetown; a daughter, Daphne Lee Ryan of Anacortes, WA; a sister, Mary Anne Schaefer (Robert) of Columbus, NJ; a brother, John Fallon Ryan (Clair) of Phoenixville, PA; two nephews and four nieces in the Philly area. In addition to his human family, Jim had great love for his three dogs, Maggie, Ginger and Emma.
