Pawleys Island:
Patricia J. Lively, 76, of Litchfield Country Club died at home on Sunday afternoon, January 13, after an extended illness.
Born in Waynesburg, Pennsylvania to Dr. Chauncy C. and Grace K. Lively, she later graduated from Penn State University, an alma mater to which she remained loyal all her life. Pat worked for the Department of Agriculture in both Philadelphia and Baltimore while earning the distinction of becoming the first woman in the Processed Products Branch to be promoted to an Officer-In-Charge of a field office. In 1980, she accepted another promotion, moving to Washington, D.C. where she soon became the Head of the Inspection Section of the Processed Products Branch, again becoming the first woman to hold this position. In this position, she worked with representatives from the Pentagon and other national organizations to develop the new MRE Ration which is currently the military combat ration used all over the world. She later held the position of Acting Deputy Director of the USDA, Fruit and Vegetable Division before retiring in 1986 and moving to Litchfield.
Pat was an active member of Georgetown Presbyterian Church, where she served as an Elder and a Stephen Minister.
Pat was a Master Landscape Design Consultant and a Master Gardener. She was a past president of the Georgetown Garden Club. She designed the club's restoration of the gardens at the historic Parker-Stewart House where a tree is planted in her honor. She was a charter member and a past president of the Low Country Herb Society, where she edited the club's quarterly newsletter for sixteen years. In 2003, the Society presented her with a lifetime membership in appreciation of her contributions.
Pat's name will always be remembered in association with Hospice of Georgetown County, now Tidelands Community Hospice, where she began volunteering soon after moving to the area. She served on the Board of Directors for many years as well as serving as a patient volunteer and a volunteer at Good Mourning Day Camp for grieving children. She was on the founding committee for The Festival of Trees and was chairperson of the Festival for many years. Pat was honored with the Nora Jones award by Tidelands Hospice in recognition of her service to the organization, its patients and their families. The 2007 Festival was dedicated to her, and she was able to attend briefly to receive the appreciation and love from an organization to which she had given so much. Pat's last months were spent being cared for by her sister and those Hospice friends she had worked beside.
Pat is survived by her sister Grace Elizabeth Long of Litchfield and by her brother, Richard G. Lively of Waynesburg, Pa. as well as 10 special nieces and nephews and 18 great nieces and great nephews. She was pre-deceased by two sisters and three brothers as well as her parents.
Memorial services will be held on Friday, January 18, at 11:00 at Georgetown Presbyterian Church with the Reverend Stephen Wilkins and the Reverend Dr. William Puckett, Jr. officiating. A reception at the church will follow. Interment will be at Greene County Memorial Park, Waynesburg, Pa.
