Obituary

Paul Ivan Skoko passed away on June 23rd after several months of illness. Mr. Skoko was born on February 3, 1944, in Georgetown, South Carolina, he was the son of Paula Ainsworth Skoko and Thomas Skoko. He graduated as valedictorian from Winyah High School in 1962 and with summa cum laude honors from the College of Charleston in 1966. Throughout his schooling, Paul was known for his artistic endeavors (he designed the logo for the Winyah Gator) and yearbook work, as well as his musical abilities. As a college student, Paul assumed the role of organist at Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church in Georgetown, a role he maintained until February of 2022. Paul taught Advanced Placement English and Drama at both McClenaghan High School and South Florence High School (he wrote the Alma Mater for South Florence) until his retirement from public education in the late 1990's. For many years, Paul commuted from Florence to Georgetown performing dual roles as educator and organist. Upon retirement from teaching, Paul lent his skills to various church and community projects around Georgetown. For years, his talents were utilized in decorating Duncan Church for the various seasons of the church year. His handiwork was often on display at the annual Hospice Festival of Trees. His calligraphy graced many documents such as baptisms, family trees, and award certificates. For every Sunday, Christmas, Easter, and special program throughout 55 plus years of service, Paul's talents were exhibited from the organ bench at Duncan Church. Paul was preceded in death by his mother, father, maternal grandparents (Julia and Paul Ainsworth), paternal grandparents (Ivan and Kata Skoko), aunts Katherine Ainsworth Williams (and her husband Herb Williams) and Katherine (Kitty) Skoko. He is survived by his first cousins Herb Williams, Jr. (Robinson) and Sammie Williams (Donna); cousin Laura Jones Meyer (Ernest); lifetime friends and neighbors Karen Higgins Price, Loril HigginsYoung (Colin), and Patricia Moore Byrd; and ever devoted friends Melanie Poit Daniels (Chip), Ron Rabon, and Louise Love. Funeral services will be held at Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church on Wednesday, July 6th, at 11:00 am. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the church parlor. Interment at Elmwood Cemetery will follow the church service. Memorials may be made to the Music Fund at Duncan Memorial United Church (901 Highmarket Street) or to the charity of one's choice. Please sign a guestbook at: www.mayerfuneralhome.com. The Georgetown Chapel of Mayer-Ethridge Funeral Home is assisting the family.
