Obituary

McClellanville: Rev. James Osgood McClellan, Jr., 93, died Thursday, February 5, 2004, at Roper Hospital in Charleston. Rev. McClellan was born July 24, 1910 in McClellanville to the late Louise Augusta Whilden McClellan and James Osgood McClellan, Sr. He was a man of deep character and grace. He will be missed by all who knew him and were served by him as a minister of the gospel of Christ. Rev. McClellan attended McClellanville schools and during the depression era served in the Civilian Conservation Corps and was stationed on Sullivan's Island. During his early career he owned and operated a general merchandising store on Highway 17 at McClellanville before entering the ministry. He attended the Baptist College at Charleston and Duke Divinity School in the 1960's. During his years as a local pastor, Rev. McClellan served the following United Methodist Parishes: Sandy Dam; Peniel; and Yemassee in the Hendersonville charge. He retired from Main Street United Methodist Church in Bamberg. Rev. McClellan was a charter member and helped organize the Clan McClellan in America. He was a member of the Exchange Club of McClellanville and the Lions Club of Walterboro. Surviving are: his loving wife of 70 years, Ruby Seigler McClellan of McClellanville; five wonderful children, James O. McClellan, III and Wilhelmina McClellan Couch and her husband George, all of McClellanville, Anne McClellan Gilliam of Newberry, John Seigler McClellan and his wife Pat of Georgetown, and Susan McClellan Kobrovsky and her husband Larry of Sullivan's Island; a brother, Leland "Shorty" M. McClellan of McClellanville; a sister, Priscilla M. Parker of McClellanville; twelve grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. Funeral services will be two o'clock Sunday afternoon, February 8, 2004 at McClellanville United Methodist Church. Officiating will be the Rev. Annette Edwards and the Rev. Carol Grant. Burial will follow in McClellanville United Methodist Cemetery. Family and friends may visit at the Georgetown Chapel of Mayer Funeral Home, Saturday afternoon, February 7, 2004, from three until five.
