Georgetown:
Richard Allen Smucker, 84, died Wednesday, October 20, 2004, at Georgetown Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Smucker was born in Orrville, Ohio on November 23, 1919, a son of the late Clarence J. Smucker and Clara May Martin Smucker. Mr. Smucker was a graduate of Ohio State University. He served in the Navy during World War II and attained the rank of Lieutenant. Mr. Smucker was a mechanical engineer and retired from Gulf Research & Development Lab. in Pittsburg, Pa. He moved to Georgetown in 1983 and was a member of Georgetown Presbyterian Church.
Woodworking was always a mainstay of his leisure time including furniture and even a sailboat or two. In post-retirement years; however, he became a luthier, mastering the art of creating hand-made musical instruments. Guitars and dulcimers in many numbers were created. The dulcimer ultimately became the area of concentration and now many musicians young and old are the proud owners of a hand-made dulcimer by Richard A. Smucker.
Surviving are: his wife, Margaret Wilton Smucker of Georgetown; a daughter, Sue Kaufman her husband Dennis of Westerville, Ohio; a son, Rand and his wife Maribeth of Murrieta, Calif.; a brother, Robert Smucker and his wife Barbara of Falls Church, Va.; three sisters, Pauline Dulaney of Muskegon, Mich., Virginia Esh of Columbus, Ohio, and Julia Penner and her husband Brund of Mt. Lake, Minn.; and four grandchildren, Carolyn Kaufman, Amy Kaufman, Steve Kaufman, and Hannah Smucker.
Memorial services will be eleven o'clock Monday morning, October 25, 2004, at Georgetown Presbyterian Church. Officiating will be the Rev. Johanna W. Adams.
