Obituary

Andrews: World War II Veteran, Robert Jackson Morris, widower of Helen Mobley Morris, died August 4, 2014 at his home. Mr. Morris was born February 17, 1924, the son of Henry Richard "Buddy" Morris and Daisy Fulton Morris. He joined the United States Army when he was nineteen, trained in Texas and served in Italy with the Tenth Mountain Division. After the war, he returned to Georgetown and worked for International Paper Company. In 1951, Robert returned to the Andrews area and bought the family farm from his father, beginning his career as a farmer. In 1957, Robert joined the SC Wildlife and Marine Resources Department (currently known as the Department of Natural Resources). In 1974, the Kingstree Optimist Club named him Law Enforcement Officer of the Year. During his career with the Wildlife Department, Robert was honored with several awards for his outstanding service. He was named District Conservation Officer of the Year in 1975. In 1982, he was promoted to lieutenant, and in 1983 he was named Conservation Officer of the year for South Carolina. He was selected from a statewide Corps of more than 200 officers. Retiring from the Wildlife Department in 1988 after thirty-one years of service, Robert stated, "I've enjoyed it and I'm leaving happy. I plan to farm and raise cattle". Mr. Morris was a member of The American Legion and the VFW. A life long member of Elim United Methodist Church, he served on various committees over the years. Mr. Morris is survived by: three daughters, Jackie M. Bailey (Bill) of Andrews, Angela M. Hamer of Georgetown, and Pamela M. Janik of Raleigh, NC; two sons, Bruce Morris (Susan) and Clifford "Kip" Morris (Becky), both of Andrews; twelve grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. In addition to his wife of sixty-five years and his parents, Mr. Morris was predeceased by his brothers, Wilbur, Tom and Walter Morris; his sisters, Lilac M. Parsons, Sadie M. Barrineau, Ruth M. Ward Baker, Wava Lee M. Parker, Mary Morris and also by a son-in-law, William (Wila) A. Hamer, Jr. A protector of wildlife and land, Robert enjoyed his life to the fullest. He will be sadly missed by his family and friends. Visitation will be Wednesday, August 6, 2014 at Mayer Funeral Home in Andrews from 6 to 8 PM. Funeral services will be held Thursday, August 7, 2014 at 5 PM at Elim United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in the Church Cemetery. Sign a guestbook at @www.mayerfuneralhome.com.
