Ward
September 25, 1938 – June 12, 2024
Roger M. Ward of Pawleys Island, S.C. passed away peacefully at his home on June 12th with his loving wife and daughters by his side. Roger was born on September 25, 1938 to Phillip M. and Phyllis Kirkpatrick Ward in Limestone, Maine. He was one of four children, all preceded him in death, Judith Featenby, Jeffrey and Thomas Ward. Roger married Sarah L. Dingle of Georgetown, S.C. in 1958. They were married for 65 years.
Roger enlisted in the Marine Corp and was stationed in Quantico, Virginia. He frequently escorted President Eisenhower to Camp David as the crew chief on HMX-1. Upon completion of his service in the Marines, he received the White House Service Award.
He retired from United Technologies, Pratt & Whitney division after 30 years. He traveled throughout North and South America, Europe, Asia and Africa as a liaison. He was the resident manager for Pan American Airlines for 12 years. He and his wife Sarah lived in Japan, Thailand and China during his career with Pratt & Whitney.
After a brief retirement, Roger returned to work at the Pawleys Island Lumber Company. His friend Duff Dawson, owner of Pawleys Island Lumber, asked him if he would like to work for him. Roger replied "I know nothing about the lumber business" however, he stayed with PI Lumber for 15 years, loving every minute of it.
Roger served the Town of Pawleys Island as the Chairman of the Towns Zoning Board of Appeals for 15 years. In recognition of his civic leadership, patriotism and support to the development of aeronautics, he was elected and enrolled as a member of the Wings Club. Roger was a gun enthusiast. He promoted responsible gun ownership and marksmanship as a NRA safety officer and a South Carolina State Police Constable. He was a member of Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church and the Solar Lodge No. 131 of East Hampton, Connecticut.
Roger is survived by his wife Sarah, as well as his children Debra Duffey of Calabash, N.C. and Sally Ward of Pawleys Island, a special brother-in-law Robert H. Featenby and a number of nieces and nephews.
The family appreciates the many kind expressions of love and concern extended to them during this time of bereavement. Our special thanks to Tidelands Hospice, Claire and Sharon. Thank you for the comfort you gave, as well as emotional support you showed our family, April, Jerilyn and Rochelle.
Services will be held at Pennyroyal Memorial Gardens on June 17th at 11:00am.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorials be made to Duncan United Methodist Church or All4Paws Animal Rescue .
The Georgetown Chapel of Mayer-Ethridge Funeral Home will be handling the arrangements.
