Obituary

Georgetown: Dr. Ruffin Smith, 80, died Tuesday, July 7, 2009, at Georgetown Memorial Hospital. Dr. Smith was born in Durham, N. C. on December 21, 1928, a son of the late William Ruffin Smith and Nancy Hart Smith. He was a graduate of the University of North Carolina and earned a Masters Degree from the University of South Carolina. Dr. Smith earned his Doctor of Chiropractic degree from Logan College of Chiropractic. He taught school and also practiced Chiropractic medicine for a time until his retirement. Dr. Smith was a communicant of Prince George, Winyah, Episcopal Church. He was also a member of the Mullins Lions Club, Winyah Lodge #40, Ancient Freemasons, and was a Shriner. Dr. Smith was a former member of Masonic Lodges in Charlotte, N. C. and Mullins. Surviving are: his wife, Patricia Hiers Smith of Georgetown; two sons, Ruffin (Glenda) Smith of Myrtle Beach and Stuart (Sharon) Smith of Murrells Inlet; a daughter, Shelly (David) Robinson of Mullins; two step-sons, Chip (Beverly) Balthis of Georgetown and Len (Jennifer) Balthis of Charleston; a step-daughter, Kathy B. (Harry) Dawson of Georgetown; thirteen grandchildren, Brittany Smith, Savannah Smith, Amanda Nobles, Katie Burroughs, Jacob Smith, Kara Smith, Carolina Smith, Melissa Dawson Courtney, Bruce Dawson, Caroline Balthis, Madison Ethridge, Ashlyn Ethridge, and Dylan Balthis; three great-grandchildren. Memorial services will be four o'clock Friday afternoon, July 10, 2009 at Prince George, Winyah, Episcopal Church. Officiating will be the Paul C. Fuener. Inurnment will follow in Prince George, Winyah, Episcopal Church Columbarium. Sign a guest book at www.mayerfuneralhome.com. The family will receive friends at the family home, 536 Highmarket St. in Georgetown, on Thursday, July 9, 2009, from five until eight and immediately following the Memorial Service on Friday, July 10, 2009, at Prince George, Winyah, Episcopal Church Parish Hall.
