Russell Raymond "Russ" Cromwell, of Pawleys Island, South Carolina, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, May 22, 2017. He was born on February 25, 1927 in New Madison, Ohio, the son of the late John Chester Cromwell and Edith Mae Brown Cromwell.
Raised on a farm in rural Darke County, Ohio, Russ enlisted in the Army after graduating from New Madison High School. He was a Veteran of World War II, serving in the Army Finance Office and caring for the wounded at Valley Forge General Hospital.
Russ was the first member of his family to attend college. He graduated from The Ohio State University with a degree in Biology and Physical Education and played freshman basketball and baseball for the Buckeyes. He taught Seventh and Eighth Grade and coached baseball, basketball and track at Butler Township and Dixie Junior High School in Ohio. After teaching several years, he completed Physical Therapy School at the Medical College of Virginia and was employed by the McGuire Veterans Administration Hospital in Richmond, Virginia.
Russ met his wife, Frances Ward "Dookie" Davis, in P.T. school. They were married at All Saints Church, Pawleys Island, in 1955, and moved to Lexington, Kentucky. He worked in Lexington as a Physical Therapist for 35 years with Yocum, Gumbert, Wheeler, Russell, Morgan and Bray, later known as Lexington Orthopedic Associates, before retiring to Pawleys Island in 1993.
Russ was appointed to the Kentucky State Board of Physical Therapy where he served as chairman and secretary. He also served as president, vice-president and secretary of the Kentucky APTA. He was a member of the Church of the Good Shepherd in Lexington where he served as an usher, Sunday School teacher and played in the church softball and bowling leagues.
Russ was an avid golfer, a die-hard Buckeye fan, enjoyed working in the yard, doing crossword puzzles, watching sports on tv and playing with his dog, Doodle. He was a member of Christ the King Anglican Church in Pawleys Island.
Russ was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years , Frances Ward Davis Cromwell and his brothers, Lloyd, William and Joseph Cromwell. He is survived by his children, John Russell Cromwell (Lisa) of Lexington, Kentucky and Marie Cromwell Lindsay (Buddy) of Pawleys Island, South Carolina and his grandchildren, Ross M. Lindsay, IV, Catharine A. Lindsay, Sloan D. Cromwell, Beckett H. Cromwell and W. Maclain Cromwell.
Graveside services will be in All Saints Church Cemetery at 10 a.m. on Friday, May 26, 2017. Officiating will be Rev. Timothy D. Surratt. Memorials may be made to Christ the King Church, 9630 Ocean Highway, Pawleys Island, S.C. 29585.
