Rutledge Baker Leland, Jr., "Wewa", 92, died Friday, September 19, 2008, at Hospice of Charleston Hospice Center in Mt. Pleasant.
Mr. Leland was born in McClellanville on February 11, 1916, a son of the late Rutledge Baker Leland and Claudia Lucille Morrison Leland. He was a lifelong resident of his beloved McClellanville. Mr. Leland attended Clemson University and served in the Navy during World War II in the Pacific Theatre. He was a member of New Wappetaw Presbyterian Church.
After the death of his father, Mr. Leland operated the family freight boat business for several years. He was a tug boat captain for R. L. Morrison & Son during the construction of the Santee Cooper Lakes. In 1948, Mr. Leland founded Leland Oil Co. in McClellanville and operated it until 1973. He was also a shrimper and in 1959 co-founded Carolina Seafood and was a manager of the company.
Mr. Leland was predeceased by: his wife of 62 years, Harriett Meyer Leland.
Survivors Include: a son, Rutledge B. Leland, III and his wife Kathy of McClellanville; two grandchildren, Allen Leland DuPre and her husband Andrew of McClellanville and Rutledge B. Leland, IV and his wife Hayley of Brevard, N. C.; three great-grandchildren, Andrew Hibben DuPre, Avery Grace Leland, and Hugh Baker DuPre; a sister, Agnes L. Baldwin of McClellanville; a cousin and dear friend, Robert E. Graham of McClellanville; a number of nieces and nephews; and many friends.
Funeral services will be three o'clock Sunday afternoon, September 21, 2008 at the graveside in New Wappetaw Presbyterian Cemetery. Officiating will be the Rev. Dr. Walter G. Cook.

The family will receive friends at 519 Pinckney St. in McClellanville Saturday afternoon, September 20, 2008, from four until six.
