Georgetown: Graveside funeral service for Sally Floyd Schwartz, 107, will be held on Friday, February 19, 2010, at 12 o'clock noon at Elmwood Cemetery in Georgetown. After a remarkably long and happy life, Mrs. Schwartz died on Thursday, February 18, 2010. Born in Lake City on March 9, 1902, she was a daughter of the late Daniel Watson and Estelle Fitch Floyd. She experienced the rigors of growing up on a tobacco farm and learning the value of hard work. After graduating from high school, she attended Greenville Women's College and then moved to Schenectady, New York, where she worked as a receptionist in a dentist's office. During her tenure there she met and married "the love of her life" – Benjamin Schwartz. Theirs was a happy and beautiful marriage until his sudden and untimely death at an early age. She then moved back to South Carolina to be near her family. Her years in Georgetown were filled with enthusiastic participation in both church and civic activities. She became an active member of First Baptist Church, where she taught for more than 25 years the Sunday School Class for the five-year-olds, whom she called "my own children." She was also a member of a book club and a garden club. Realizing the importance of exercise, she enjoyed walking in her neighborhood, usually accompanied by her dog and/or some of her neighbors. She took trips to all parts of the United States, as well as a number of foreign countries. Among her favorite spots was New York City, where she often invited a friend or relative to travel with her to see Broadway shows and operas. Other favorites of hers included the following: dogs, birds, flowers, Pawley's Island, the Rice Paddy in Georgetown, the Atlanta Braves, the Democratic Party, John F. Kennedy, and most especially – her family. She was the consummate lady! Dainty, beautifully coiffured, impeccably dressed, she was the epitome of good taste and good manners. Known for her quiet intelligence, her engaging manner, and her thoughtful demeanor, she symbolized the very essence of a true Southern lady. She was "the sunshine of our family." Survivors include one nephew, three nieces, multiple grandnieces and grandnephews, as well as their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren (many of whom she considered her own). She was predeceased by one brother, Carl D. Floyd of Lake City, and five sisters: Delmotte F. Layton of Georgetown, Resina Floyd of Atlanta, Verne F. Nesmith of Lake City, Marjorie F. Mainwaring of Fort Myers, Fla., and Kate F. Smith of Columbia. Family members appreciate the love and care given to "our dear Aunt Sally" by the staffs of Morningside Assisted Living in Georgetown, Savannah Grace Rehabilitation Center in Mt.
