Obituary

GEORGETOWN – Sarah Parker Lumpkin died on Friday, February 25, 2022 surrounded by her family at her home in Georgetown, South Carolina. Sarah was born in Columbia, South Carolina, June 11, 1926. She was the daughter of James Rose Parker and Sarah "Sally" Clarke deSaussure. Sarah had two sisters, Penelope Bentley Parker (Peterson) (predeceased) and Martha Allston Parker (Allison). Sarah grew up on Front Street in Georgetown South Carolina and attended Winyah High School. She graduated Converse College in 1946 where she majored in chemistry. She was the beloved wife of Dr. Robert Lucas Lumpkin whom she married after his graduation from the Medical University of South Carolina in 1951. Sarah was a strong, kind, respected, humble, and cherished wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, historian, equestrian, and avid gardener. She authored the book "Heritage Passed On" in which detailed the history of the Prince George Winyah Parish in Georgetown County. As a beloved member of the church and community, she served on numerous boards and committees including: Senior Warden and Vestry member of Prince George Winyah Church President of Episcopal Women of South Carolina President of the Colonial Dames of South Carolina Tidelands Hospice Board Chair of the Georgetown Bi-Centennial Celebration in 1976 Historic Prince Frederick Summer Chapel in Plantersville, South Carolina Sarah Lumpkin was predeceased by her husband, Dr. Robert L. Lumpkin in 2007. She is survived by her three children, Robert L. Lumpkin Jr. (Cathy), Sarah deSaussure Lumpkin and Rutledge Parker Lumpkin. She has seven grandchildren, Mary deSaussure Toelkes (Travis), Sarah Allston Baker, Nathaniel Floyd Baker (Kathleen), Catherine Dargan Postal (Drew), Robert L. Lumpkin III, John Parker Lumpkin (Hollis), and Henry Allston Lumpkin (Carson). She also has eight great grandchildren. Funeral services will be at one o'clock Sunday, 27 February 2022 at Prince George Winyah Parish Church. Officiating will be the Rev. Gary Beson II and Rev. Mike Lumpkin. Burial will follow in the Churchyard. Memorials may be sent to Prince George Winyah Church, www.pgwinyah.com in Georgetown, SC.
