Georgetown:
Shirley Calhoun Cauthen, 87, loyal friend, beloved mother, and loving grandmother is waltzing with angels. Shirley passed August 18, 2022 in Georgetown, SC.
Shirley was born in Conway, SC on January 29, 1935 to Thurman Sessions Calhoun and Myrtle Hughes Calhoun, and was the second-youngest of her siblings: John C. Calhoun, Rebecca Calhoun Braatz, and Thurman Sessions Calhoun, Jr. Shirley graduated from Winyah High School, Class of 1953, and attended Anderson College. She started at International Paper Company in the 1950s, working with some of the first computers in data processing, and was one of the first women to hold this traditionally "male" position. After retiring from International Paper 43 years later, she worked at Augustus & Carolina in sales and interior design.
Shirley, known to her grandchildren as Gunny, was ever-present in her family's lives; a wellspring of love, kindness, and wit. Her boundless curiosity, ceaseless drive for adventure, and timeless, effortless elegance exemplified a zest for life that served her all of her days. She never met a stranger in her life, and she spread her kindness and generosity to everyone around her. Gunny always made life fun and exciting—whether she was traveling the world, riding down Front Street, or cracking jokes at the dinner table, she was the quintessential expression of a life lived to the fullest.
Through the years, she enjoyed dancing, boating, reading, bridge, fashion, interior design, bowling and antiquing with friends old and new. In most recent times, she looked forward to daily rides around Georgetown recounting memories of younger years, connecting with friends, loving her dog Link, and enjoying her favorite daily specials from the Ball and Que and Sunday lunch from Deborah's Kitchen.
Blessed to have Shirley in their lives are her daughter Angela Campbell Barrow, her grandchildren A. Elliott Barrow, III and Elizabeth C. Barrow, her loving family, and her dear friends. Shirley was predeceased by her parents, siblings, and her extraordinary husband James "Jim" Carlisle Cauthen.
Shirley attended Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church in Georgetown, SC since childhood, where a Funeral Service celebrating her life will be held at 2:00 PM Wednesday, August 24, 2022. Burial will follow the service at Pennyroyal Memorial Gardens, with visitation beginning at 1:00 PM in the Church Parlor.
