Obituary

Andrews: Shirley Channel Walters was born November 28, 1939 in Greeley, Colorado to John H. And Bessie A. (Calkins) Channel. She grew up in Greeley and graduated from Greeley Central High School in 1957. She briefly attended Colorado State College, now known as University of Northern Colorado. In 1958, Shirley married Edgar Walters II and moved to Charleston, South Carolina. After a few short years in Charleston, Shirley and Edgar moved to Andrews, where she set about becoming a life long member of that community. Shirley quickly made many friends in Andrews, joined the Baptist Church and went to work for Swinnie Supply, where she worked for 38 years. Always caring and fiercely loyal to her friends and family, she could often be seen scurrying around town, on her way to visit or deliver something wonderful from her kitchen, to a sick or home bound friend. Shirley has a true zest for life and an abiding faith. She laughed easily and loved deeply. Shirley went peacefully to her heavenly home on August 22, 2008, with her family at her side. Left to grieve her passing: her loving children, son, Edgar B. Walters III and his wife Bunny and daughter Kelly Mitchell and her husband Bobby, all of Columbia, South Carolina; five adoring grandchildren, Justin, Jonathan, and Lindsey Mitchell and Claire and Chloe Walters; her best friend and loyal companion, William McGuirt of Lancaster, South Carolina; brother, Harold "Mike" Channel of Greeley, Colorado; and sister, Sharon Harter and her husband James of Warsaw, Missouri. A special friend and caregiver, Kathy Ludlum and many, many life long friends and family members. Waiting to welcome her home: her parents, John and Bessie; her husband, Edgar; five brothers, Franklin "Pat", Bill, Clyde, George, and Charles Channel; and three sisters, Nellie Vanderslice, Geraldine Paul, and Dollie McCullough. Funeral services will be at two o'clock Monday afternoon, August 25, 2008, at First Baptist Church of Andrews. Officiating will be the Rev. Donald P. Sapp. Burial will follow in Andrews Memorial Cemetery. Sign a guest book at www.mayerfuneralhome.com. The family will receive friends at the Andrews Chapel of Mayer Funeral Home Sunday afternoon, August 24, 2008 from three until five. Memorials may be made to The Salvation Army, P. O. Box 2716, Georgetown, S. C. 29442 or First Baptist Church of Andrews, 106 E. Oakland St., Andrews, S. C. 29510. God watched you as you suffered, and knew you had your share. He gently closed your weary eyes and took you in his care. Your memory is our keepsake, with that we will never part. God has you in his keeping, we have you in our hearts. Nothing is more beautiful than the memories we have of you. To us you were someone special. God must have thought so too. All our lives we shall miss you, as the years come and go, but in our hearts you will love forever. Because we love you so. God saw you were getting tired, and a cure was not to be. So he put his arms around you and whispered "Come with me". With tearful eyes we watched you suffer and fade away. Although we loved you dearly, you were not meant to stay. A golden heart stopped beating, hard-working hands to rest. God broke our hearts to prove to us, He only takes the best! Funeral Home: Andrews Chapel of Mayer Funeral Home 409 S. Morgan Avenue Andrews, SC US 29510
