Pawleys Island:
James Richard "Jim" Simmons, 84, passed away Wednesday, June 17th, 2020, at the home of his loving daughter and caregiver, Julie Simmons.
Mr. Simmons was born in Myrtle Beach on October 1, 1935, son of the late William Foxworth Simmons and Annie Mae Williams Simmons. He grew up in Florence, South Carolina, and graduated from Mclenaghan High School in 1953. He attended The University of South Carolina before enrolling in the United States Marine Corps. After a period in the Marine Corps he was sent to the United States Navy Flight School in Pensacola, Florida. After his discharge from the Navy he went to work for Southern Bell/AT&T/Bellsouth, for whom he worked until he retired. He met and married Jo Anne Galloway of Florence in 1957, and they moved to Pawleys Island in 1997. They were members of St. Paul's Waccamaw United Methodist Church in Pawleys Island, and they were married for forty-four years before Jo Anne predeceased him in 2001.
Surviving Jim are his daughter, Julie Carol Simmons and her longtime partner Scott Lawrence of Murrells Inlet; his son, James Richard (Rick) Simmons Jr. and his wife Sue Scaife Simmons of Pawleys Island; Rick and Sue's children, Christopher Cord Simmons of Pawleys Island, and Nina Courtenay Simmons Herndon and her husband Matthew Glover Herndon of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He is also survived by a brother, Tom Simmons, and his wife Rudolph, of Wildwood, Florida; and a sister, Annette Taylor, of Goldsboro, North Carolina, as well as several nieces and nephews.
In light of COVID restrictions the family will be having a private ceremony. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials be sent to Saint Frances Animal Shelter, 125 Ridge Street, Georgetown SC, 29440.
