Stephen Neil Hopkins, 74, of Pawleys Island, South Carolina died October 28, 2026. He is survived by his loving wife Hilde, as well as his son J. Bradley Hopkins (Mary), sister Peggy Hopkins (Mike), loving nieces Jessica Sterling (John), Wendy Pittard (Karl) and more adoring nieces and nephews than he could count. His constant companion, Brandy Girl, remains at watch over the family home.
Born September 5, 1952, in Charlotte, NC he was the son of John and Gloria Hopkins. He was preceded in death by both parents, his sister Barbara, and his niece Rachel Darling.
Stephen and his loving wife met in the most unconventional way. His drumming skills and kind personality during a dinner theater tour in Jacksonville, FL won her over. He spent his 20s traveling with different bands across the country, finally settling into touring to various dinner theaters in the southeast – no doubt fate led these two together there.
He earned his pilot’s license and flew banners for Sky Signs. He earned his Master Mechanics Degree in Aviation and began working for Spirit Airlines until he retired in 2024.
An avid NHRA fan, Stephen loved taking his son Bradley to the Drag Races. His time after retirement revolved around spending time with family. In later years, to know Stephen was to appreciate the sheer simplicity in his life. He will be mostly remembered for the loving time spent with family, and how he never failed to make sure he told his wife of 47 years every day, how much he loved her.
A Celebration of Life will be held from 2:00 – 4:00 PM on Sunday, November 22 at Lands End Yacht Club in Georgetown. All are welcome. Interment will be held later in Charlotte, NC.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are to be sent to a local charity of your choice in his memory.
The Maryville Chapel of Mayer-Ethridge Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. The family appreciates condolences at www.mayerfuneralhome.com.
