IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Sue Hagood
Overton
April 15, 1936 – April 19, 2025
Pawleys Island
Sue Hagood Overton, 89, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 19, 2025. A resident of Pawleys Island, SC at the time of her passing, Sue was born in San Antonio, TX on April 15, 1936. Hers was a full and vibrant life marked by devotion to her family, enduring friendships, and a spirit of creativity and generosity.
The daughter of Cora (nee Thomas) Hagood of Nashville, TN & Colonel Johnson Hagood of Charleston, SC, Sue was a self-described "army brat," spending much of her childhood traveling between her home in Charleston and the various countries where her father was stationed and later worked, including The Philippines, Venezuela, and Colombia. She attended school at Charleston's Ashley Hall and graduated from Vanderbilt University in Nashville. These experiences helped shape the thoughtful and engaging woman she would become —one who valued travel, learning, and connection throughout her life.
Sue met her husband, celebrated Korean War Ace Dolphin D. Overton, III of Andrews, SC, at a dress parade at The Citadel. The couple resided in Smithfield, NC where they raised five children. Sue was a devoted member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Smithfield, as well as a dedicated volunteer for Meals on Wheels and many other community support organizations.
Sue was also a successful entrepreneur, co-founding the "Raggy-O Chutney" brand of savory sauces with her dear friend, Carolyn Ragsdale. Their award-winning chutney was a staple in numerous specialty food stores and supermarkets along the East Coast and was featured at food shows far and wide.
Shortly after Dolph's death in 2013, Sue moved to Georgetown, SC where she attended Prince George Winyah Parish Church. Those who knew her remember Sue as generous, loving, kind-hearted, and always ready with a smile and a kind word.
Sue is survived by her beloved family: step-sister Paula Hughson, MD; half-brothers Johnson Hagood and James Hagood, MD; five children and their spouses Kathleen Overton and Martin Ferarra, Dolphin Overton, IV and Michele H. Overton, Jane Cobb and Robert Cobb, Charlotte (Charlie) York, and Carolyn Morton; grandchildren Jo Elizabeth Bailey, Lauren Call, Dolphin Overton, V, Robert Cobb, Jr., Johnson Cobb, Calvin Cobb, Io Weiss, James Morton, Charlotte York, and Ella York; and great-grandchildren Eloise Bailey, Raleigh Bailey, Nora Call, Bransom Call, Dolphin Overton, VI, and Oakley Overton.
A celebration of Sue's life will be held at a future date to honor the remarkable person she was—devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, friend, entrepreneur, and faithful member of her community. May her memory bring comfort and joy to all who knew and loved her.
