Obituary

Andrews: Suzy Eloise Clemons Gilmer of Andrews, 84, early Saturday morning, July 29, 2006, of Parkinson's disease at the Pawleys Island home of her daughter. A memorial service will be held at Trinity United Methodist Church on Sunday, July 30, 2006, at three o'clock in the afternoon. Reverend Sandra Poirel will officiate. Interment will occur at a later date. Robert Bissell and Annie Louise Clemons were given the gift of Suzy Eloise, their first daughter, on March 31, 1922. In 1941, she married Lionel Russell Gilmer, of Red Bay, Alabama, who predeceased her in 1977. Surviving that union are three children: a son, Reverend Clifford Russell Gilmer of Georgetown and two daughters, Delores Suzanne Gilmer Cox and Carolyn Yvonne Gilmer Gee of Pawley Island. Mrs. Gilmer was the adoring grandmother of seven grandchildren; Clifford Russell Gilmer, Jr. of Cartersville, Georgia; Carolyn Gwynne Gilmer Judy of Lexington; Daniel Kirkland Gilmer of Summerville; Woodrow Wilson Cox, III of Clemson; William Alexander Cox of Charleston; Suzanne Gilmer Franklin Stamper of Simpsonville, and Emily Caroline Gilmer Franklin of Pawleys Island. In addition, there are seven great grandchildren: Clifford Russel Gilmer, III, James David Gilmer, Graycynne Gilmer Judy, John Thomas Judy, III, Lauren Evan Gilmer, Lindsay Nicole Gilmer and Kaitlyn Alexander Cox. The deceased family of origin consisted of twelve children; three young brothers who died before the birth of the other nine. Predeceasing her of those remaining nine, are three brothers and one sister, Carlisle Clemons, Jackson Earl Clemons, Samuel Patrick Clemons and Mary Faye Clemons Cooper. Remaining are two brothers and two sisters; Franklin Ervin Clemons, Robert Bissell Clemons, Jr., Roberta Louise Clemons Tisdale and Emma Frances Clemons Davis. Suzy embraced as her own the spouses of all her siblings, as well as the spouses of her three children, her grandchildren, and her great grandchildren. She also welcomed their extended family and friends as "family". Many dear nieces and nephews, their spouses and their children love and were loved by Aunt Suzy. Everyone always knew there was enough room for one more plate at her table. Affectionately referred to as "Ms. Suzy", she is also remembered as owner of the Calico Closet which she established at age 52. Retired at age 75, she moved to Pawleys Island. Prior to operating the Calico Closet, Suzy worked as teller at South Carolina National Bank in Andrews. Most importantly, her first career was that of homemaker, mother and helpmate to her husband who owned and operated Farmers County Line Stockyard in Andrews. Her children remember her as one who taught them to love God, nature and humanity. To have known her is to know the meaning and personification of gentleness and strength.
