Georgetown:
Usher Thomasson Winslett, Jr., of Georgetown, South Carolina, died Tuesday, September 18, in Georgetown Memorial Hospital at age 75.
Mr. Winslett was born July 16, 1932 in Macon, Georgia. He received his degree in civil engineering from Georgia Tech in 1955, and went to work in cement and construction materials business. He spent the last eight years of his career in Buenos Aires as president of Compania Argentina de Cemento Portland, the South American subsidiary of U.S.-based Lone Star Industries.
After retirement in 1989, he moved with his wife, Linda Stoner Winslett, to Columbia and DeBordieu Colony, near Georgetown.
Mr. Winslett was an accomplished participant in many volunteer endeavors. He was an active member of the Columbia Rotary Club for many years, and was a member of the Order of Freemasons for more than 50 years. He was also active in the Presbyterian Church, serving as a deacon of Eastminster Presbyterian Church in Columbia, and was an elder on the Session in the Georgetown Presbyterian Church. In addition, Mr. Winslett enjoyed a lifelong association with the Boy Scouts, attaining the rank of Eagle Scout as a boy, and then serving as an adult volunteer leader; in 1979 he received Scouting's Silver Beaver Award for his lifetime of distinguished service.
He was instrumental in the affairs of DeBordieu Colony in Georgetown, including serving as president of the DeBordieu Community Association in 1999-2000.
Mr. Winslett is survived by his wife of more than fifty years, Linda Stoner Winslett, and by their two children and their spouses, Shari Lyn Kushner and Usher Thomasson Winslett, III of New York, N.Y. and Linda Stoner Winslett and Donald Paulding Irwin of Richmond, Va. He also had six grandchildren: Louise P. G. Irwin Welch, Elizabeth Sinclair Irwin, Alexander Winslett Pankoff, Casey Kushner Winslett, Jamie Kushner Winslett, and Caroline Winslett Irwin.
Two months before his death, Mr. Winslett and his family had been fortunate enough to celebrate his 75th birthday, and his and Linda's 50th wedding anniversary, with a vacation in Bermuda.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, September 21 at Georgetown Presbyterian Church, at 11:00 AM. The family will receive visitors in the fellowship hall following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to Georgetown Presbyterian Church.
