Pawleys Island:
Virginia McGavack Leslie Hampton, 87, passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 26, 2012 at Tidelands Community Hospice House.
Mrs. Hampton was born on June 6, 1924 in New York City, N.Y. She grew up in Leonia, N.J., where she met and married the late Jesse B. Leslie, Jr. Following her first husband's death, Mrs. Hampton married the late Kenneth Hampton of N.J.
Mrs. Hampton was very active in the Girl Scouts and the Leonia Women's Club and served as its president many times. She started her own preschool, which she ran for 25 years. She later worked as a special educator aide in the Leonia Public Schools until retirement in the early 1990's. Mrs. Hampton moved to S.C. in 2006 and became very involved with the Lakes at Litchfield Residence Council and served as its chairperson, a job she really enjoyed. Bridge was her passion, and you could always find her at the bridge table. She loved her family, and was so caring of them, her friends, and her neighbors.
Surviving are: a daughter, Carol Anne Van Duyn (Ennes) of Georgetown; a son-in-law, Jerry Delany of Toms River, N.J.; a brother, John McGavack (Gail) of Hilton Head Island; three grandchildren, Susan Versen (Christopher) of Harrisburg, Va., Sean Delany of Breck, N.J., and James Van Duyn (Maggie) of Richmond, Vt.; and five great-grandchildren. Mrs. Hampton was predeceased by a daughter, Barbara Delany.
Memorial services will be held at one o'clock on Saturday afternoon, March 3, 2012, in the Charleston Dining Room at the Lakes at Litchfield.
