Obituary

Pawleys Island: Walter Garth Holmes of Pawley's Island died at Tidelands Waccamaw Hospital on Saturday, June 2, 2018. He was 93. A memorial service will be at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, June 7, at Mayer Funeral Home in Georgetown, followed by interment at All Saints cemetery at Pawley's Island. Officiating will be the Reverend Patrick J. Stenson and Robert L. Grafe, Jr. Surviving are his wife Marjorie Priscilla Davis Holmes and daughter Patsy Holmes, both of Pawley's Island; his granddaughter Stokes Holmes of Savannah; two sisters, Carol Grubbs of Simpsonville and Lou Mouchet of Charlotte; and numerous nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by sons Walter Garth Jr and Michael Davis, and brothers Max, Maurice, Lowry, and Joe. Garth was born in Clover to Walter Edward and Martha Jane Maxwell Holmes. He served as a Marine in the Pacific theatre during World War II and graduated from Clemson College in textile engineering. He worked for Dan River Mills in Virginia; Burlington Industries in Virginia and North Carolina; and Springs Mills and Deering-Milliken in South Carolina. Later he operated his own cut-and-sew plant, Abouris, in Marion. He also worked in real estate at the beach and at the time of his death operated Creekside Mobile Home Park in North Myrtle Beach. He enjoyed golf, his dog, and eating out. He attended All Saints at Pawley's Island.
