Pawley's Island:
Walter Alexander Hughes, 80, died Saturday, October 25, 2003, at his residence.
Mr. Hughes was born in Murphy, N. C. on October 26, 1922, a son of the late William Astor Hughes and Rosie Jane Hartford Hughes. He served in the Army during World War II. Mr. Hughes was a retired agent for Liberty Life Ins. Co. He was a member of First Assembly of God. Mr. Hughes served his church as teacher of the Open Bible Class, a lay minister, and as a deacon. He was the widower of Clara Mae Childers Hughes.
Surviving are: his wife, Pauline Marsh Hughes of Pawley's Island; five sons, Tony Hughes and his wife Sandy of Georgetown, Tommy Hughes and his wife Pat of Andrews, Tim Hill of Mt. Pleasant, and Eddie Hughes and Larry Hughes, both of Trio; a daughter, Shirley J. Small of Georgetown; three step-sons, Michael L. Harper and his wife Carolyn, David G. Harper, and his wife Linda, and Steve M. Harper and his wife Debra, all of Georgetown; a step-daughter, Rebecca H. Mescher and her husband Jack of Andrews; three brothers, Clay Hughes of Coos Bay, Ore., Hartford Hughes of Aumsville, Ore., and Bill Hughes of Peachtree, N. C.; two sisters, Josephine H. Williams of Murphy, N. C. and Christine H. Anderson of Dexter, Ore.; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; and twenty-one step-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be one o'clock Tuesday afternoon, October 28, 2003, at First Assembly of God. Officiating will be the Rev. Dr. C. Bradley Morris. Burial will follow in Pennyroyal Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends at First Assembly of God Monday evening, October 27, 2003, from six until eight.
