Pawley's Island:
William D. Alexander, III died at Waccamaw Community Hospital at Murrells Inlet on December 9, 2003, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. William D. Alexander, Jr. of Charlotte, N.C. His two wives Louise and Jean, his two sisters, Emily and Elizabeth, and his brother, Henry predeceased him. Mr. Alexander is survived by his wife, Alice, two brothers, Robert of San Antonio, Tex. and John of Charlotte, N.C., a son, William D. Alexander, IV and a grandson Adrian, both of Cape Elizabeth, N.C.
He graduated from Central High School in Charlotte, N.C., Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Va., and N.C. State University in Raleigh, N.C. Mr. Alexander had a long career in the Army and Air Force, including various assignments in the U.S., and overseas in the Philippines, Guam and Japan. He retired as a Colonel in Los Angeles from the Air Force Ballistic Missile Division, where he was in charge of designing the facilities for deployment of the Atlas, Titan, and Minuteman ballistic missiles. Mr. Alexander was Vice President and President of SSV&K Consulting Engineers in New York City and was a registered Professional Engineer in eleven states. He managed and directed the design of the NASA Vehicle Assembly Building and Launch Control Center at Cape Canaveral, Fla. Mr. Alexander also directed the design and construction of the Fermi National Accelerator Lab in Batavia, Ill. He directed the design and construction of Phase A of the MARTA transit system in Atlanta, Ga. and consulted on many other projects across the U.S. Mr. Alexander was also one of the founders of The Lakes at Litchfield. He was a member of the Navajo Club in Charlotte, N.C., The Moles in New York City, the National Academy of Engineering, the Phi Kappa Phi, Tau Beta Pi, ASCE, SAME, a Kentucky Colonel, Idaho Lodge No. 1, AF & AM, and All Saints Church, Waccamaw.
Memorial services will be Wednesday afternoon, December 17, 2003 at All Saints Church, Waccamaw at one-thirty o'clock.
