Obituary

Georgetown: William H. Gaultney, 61, died at his residence of natural causes on Wednesday, October 15, 2008. The relatives and friends are invited to attend a memorial service at Mayer Funeral Home, 222 St. James Street in Georgetown on Sunday, October 19 at three o'clock. Friends may visit with the family between two and three o'clock. Mr. Gaultney was born April 3, 1947 in Georgetown, the son of the late Josie Mae Holden and William Hawley Gaultney. He was a graduate of Winyah High School, where he served as co-captain of the Winyah Gators and was the star fullback. He was voted by Sports Illustrated magazine as one of the top 100 high school athletes in the US. He went on to play football at Coffeyville Community College and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Education degree from Western Carolina and received his Masters of Education from Charleston Southern University. A man who deeply loved football and softball, he coached for many years at Socastee, North, and Hanahan High schools. He received Coach of the Year several years while coaching softball at Hanahan High School. Coach Gaultney led his Hawkett softball team to win lower state championship titles. He taught high school physical science and biology. He was an avid hunter, collector, a wonderful father, and friend to many. Surviving are: one daughter, Lisa Rebecca Gaultney of Daniel Island; one brother James D. Gaultney of Summerville; several loving nieces and nephews; and cousin Joyce Goodwin and her husband Earl of Georgetown. He was predeceased by: grandparents, Ada Lee and Hollis Holden and Fannie Alice and John William Gaultney; and two half sisters, Barbara Parsons and Sue Morris. Up until the time of his death, he coached many neighborhood up and coming softball pitchers.
