Obituary

Georgetown, SC

Wyatt Clay Nettles, Sr., 83, husband of Virginia Carter "Ginny" Nettles, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 31, 2023, at his home in Georgetown. He was born in Alachua, FL, a son of the late Archie and Margaret (Wilkes) Nettles.

He was a member of Lake City Baptist Church and currently a member of First Baptist Church of Georgetown. He and his beautiful wife, Ginny, have never spent a night apart – where you saw one, the other was always close by. They have been best friends since they were 17 years old, and were married for 66 years.

Wyatt was a member of several organizations including a former officer of the Lions Club, a Mason, and member and former President of the Lake City County Club. He was an avid golfer, fisherman, and hunter.

He was the owner of Carter Manufacturing for over 66 years and co-owner with his son of Cam-Branch Timber for 15 years. He was hard working, mostly described as a "man's man", finally retiring at age 82. Tough on the outside and warm and loving on the inside, he had a wonderful sense of humor and quick, and was often the entertainer of any gathering. His comments will continue to bring a smile, a wink, and a chuckle to those who were privileged to have known him.

He loved his nickname, Skippy, given to him by his daughter-in-law, and hearing it brought a smile and a giggle right up to the end. Wyatt was known to be a great judge of character, and was blessed with the gift of discernment. He loved his family, friends, and employees. He loved helping others and spoiling his grandchildren, almost never missing any event or game. He would always proudly point out which one was "his", and could always be heard cheering them on! Wyatt was a proud husband, father, and grandfather.

He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Virginia Carter "Ginny" Nettles of the home; one son, Wyatt "Clay" Nettles, Jr. and his wife, Kathy Spring, of Scranton; two grandchildren, Wyatt Clay "Trey" Nettles, III and his wife, Laney, of Lake City and Margaret Elizabeth "Liza" Nettles Howard and her husband, Ryan of Coward; three great-grandchildren, "Cohen" Joseph Howell, "Grace" Elizabeth Howell, and Stanley "Camden" Nettles; one brother, Wade Nettles of Port St. Lucie, FL; and a very special companion, his buddy Fido, his cat of 16 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Virginia Nanette "Nan" Nettles; one brother, Wyan Nettles; and a stepdaughter, Taylor Leigh Flowers.

The family would like to express special thanks and appreciation to Debbie Stringer and his wonderful friend, Eddie Chacon.
