Obituary

Georgetown: Zola G. Bessinger, 84, died Friday, June 23, 2006 at Georgetown Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Bessinger was born July 16, 1921 in Cornell, Wisconsin, a daughter of the late Claude and Anna Gillette of Fountain City, Wis. She was a graduate of Winyah High School and attended Cornell University. Mrs. Bessinger was a Women's Auxiliary Army Corps (WAAC) (Special Service) veteran of World War II. She was stationed in the European Theatre as a secretary for General Patton and a USO volunteer. Mrs. Bessinger was often requested to sing the "Ave Maria" for many veterans' Masses while in Paris, France. Mrs. Bessinger was a devoted member of St. Mary, Our Lady of Ransom Catholic Church, where she had been married and had participated in the Choir as a soprano voice. She was "ecumenical" in her love of Jesus-reaching out to others. She was often asked to sing in the "Messiah" at Prince George Winyah Episcopal Church. Mrs. Bessinger previously worked as a bookkeeper for Georgetown Memorial Hospital before retiring as head bookkeeper-accountant of the Medical Building in Georgetown. After retirement, she worked as a part-time secretary for a local church. Surviving Mrs. Bessinger, a blessed wife of fifty-nine years and loving mother, are: her husband, James C. Bessinger of Georgetown; two daughters, Gloria Prosser and her husband Norman and Linda Bessinger, all of Charleston; two sons, James L. Bessinger and his wife Carol and Douglas Bessinger and his wife Christina, all of Georgetown; a sister, Violet Jones of Arcadia, Wis.; four grandsons; two granddaughters; and a great-grandson.
